Timeless, or trend?

In an era of AI, Pinterest & home accounts galore, where inspiration is endless and trends move at unprecedented speed, it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish between what we genuinely love and what we've simply seen repeatedly. From curated Pinterest boards to algorithm-led social feeds, our perception of good design is constantly being shaped by external influences. The question is: how do we create homes that feel authentically ours?

What's being shown with a trending audio on TikTok today maybe long gone by next month, brand deals and gifting to influences make sense checking the market even more difficult. So we've stripped it back, so you don't have to.

Starting a whole home renovation or just your back bedroom, should always be approached using the same principles. Here's how we like to begin:

- Who is this space for?

- What are they using it for?

- How often will it be used?

- Is this a 'forever' space?

Having these simple key points nailed gives you a few fundamental blocks to build on such as the narrative of the space,  flow / functionality, and your budget. If this is a self executed project, try and cancel out all the noise, don't just go to your most recently saved, what's been a love of yours ever since you can remember, cool or not cool, this is you.

Already overwhelmed? Keep going. With the majority of our clients, this is when we're contacted, they're in a muddled headspace filled with existing furniture, new trends and what they think they 'should do'.

Whether you're working with a listed building bound with existing architectural features or feel like your new build doesn't really feel like 'you', we've got you. Recipe to follow...

Designing a home that's timeless but still oozes character and flare, think of it like baking a cake. All layers are different, but seamlessly bind together to create something beautiful.

First you have your sponge, the fundamental base. A solid lasting platform to support everything else. These are your walls, architectural details, space planning & electrics. The way we transition through our homes impacts our life daily, if we're conscious of it or not. Convenience, functionality, ceiling heights and even the way our home is lit will lay silently, rent free, in your subconscious every single day. So if you can create a space which nourishes all of these elements at the core, you're off to a flying start.

This layer takes the most consideration and is where you want to start building the timeless bones of your space. Stay grounded, think practically, what's your life going to look like not only this week but in 10/15 years to come? There's plenty of time for your personality to shine through, but this isn't a phase you want to be repeating periodically. Do you value light? Comfort? Storage? Entertaining? Or a quiet reading nook? The more honest you can be, the longer your home will live to serve you. (as it should).

Once your sponge is perfectly baked, you add your icing: e.g flooring, lighting, key furniture, hardware & joinery. A soft middle layer that elevates your sponge perfectly, setting the tone of the space through investment pieces and your choice of finishes.

You can take the reins here. You're starting to write the narrative for your home, are there any particular surroundings or history you'd like to honour? For me, living in a Victorian terrace, I was so excited to restore the house's original fireplaces, ornate plasterwork cornicing etc, I felt it deserved it. But fear not, you're not totally dictated to by the style of your home. Whilst it is common to have nods to the era, the really fun part comes with juxtaposition, layering & complimenting the space, not copying it.

No delicious cake is ever complete without its toppings, this is your home's jewellery. Smaller, decorative items are great to have as moving pieces, should you be that way inclined. (I certainly am).

Don't be afraid if you want a few bobbin lamps, scallop runners, or ditsy print cushions. Yes, you maybe leaning slightly into 'trends', but these are easily interchangeable and you definitely shouldn't punish yourself as your style evolves over time.  In fact, I personally love a bit of a freshen up around the house,  swapping cushions around different rooms, a new shade on a lamp, changing my candle colour throughout the seasons? yes please.

Avoiding change is not what i'm preaching here, it's knowing where to make them, without altering the language of your space. Considered interiors are layered, reflecting layers of your time, layers of family and layers of personality. Built upon your sponge base of flowing rooms, sweeping stairs, clever nooks and beautiful joinery. The building blocks of your home should allow you to feel a sense of freedom, allowing yourself to be experimental, and being confident enough to evolve harmoniously.

The perfect three layers to perfection, voila!
