Have you ever walked into a space that just feels special? You might not immediately be able to put your finger on why, but there’s something about the attention to detail, the proportions, the materials and the way everything sits together that makes you want to take it all in?

It’s a rather addictive feeling, and one we’re always chasing when designing a home.

So, we thought we’d share some of the design decisions we use time and time again in interiors that feel considered, refined and, ultimately, luxurious.

Up first, the proportions of a space. We think there’s often a general hesitation around scale, with smaller pieces being seen as the ‘safer’ option. However, filling a room with undersized furniture, rugs and lighting will often have the opposite effect, leaving the space feeling disjointed, visually cluttered and slightly underwhelming.

Working with proportions that feel appropriate for the architecture of your home will immediately make a room feel more grounded and intentional. Think of your rug as the anchor of the space. Rather than floating in the middle of the room, it should help connect and ground the furniture surrounding it. Furniture, too, should feel generous rather than sparse, confidently occupying the space without overwhelming it.

It’s this quiet confidence in a room’s proportions that can make an interior feel truly luxurious.

Secondly, following on rather nicely from our ramble about scale, buy well, buy once. None of us are perfect, and speaking from personal experience, it can be incredibly tempting during a renovation to fill a space with temporary pieces just so that there’s something there. It’s something I’ve certainly done before in my own home.

The problem is that once a room has something filling the gap, it can subconsciously stop feeling like a priority. Suddenly, the piece that was only meant to be there ‘for now’ gets pushed further and further down the list because, technically, the problem has already been solved.

Leaving a space empty, ready and waiting for its forever piece, keeps it at the forefront of your mind and makes you far more likely to give it the attention it deserves. And, of course, there’s the added benefit of not buying twice. There’s something so much more satisfying about waiting, finding the right piece and knowing you’ve done the job properly. Give it a go, trust me.

Up at number three, invest in the best joinery your budget will allow. Freestanding furniture will always have its place and can be beautifully incorporated into a home, but there’s something particularly special about a piece that has been designed specifically for the architecture and proportions of a room.

Beautiful bespoke joinery creates an immediate sense of individuality. It allows you to introduce tailored finishes, natural materials and refined detailing in a way that feels completely integrated into the space.

The best joinery doesn’t simply feel like furniture that has been placed in a room, it feels like it belongs there. It brings a sense of permanence, craftsmanship and quiet luxury that can completely transform any scheme.

Number four: layer, layer, layer. This also ties into not being afraid to properly fill a space. There’s often an assumption that calm interiors are created through minimalism, when in reality, a room can feel far more relaxing when it is balanced, comforting and easy to understand. Layering is what gives a home depth.

That doesn’t necessarily mean adding more stuff for the sake of it. It’s about combining materials, textures, lighting, furniture, artwork and collected pieces in a way that creates warmth and visual interest. And despite what you might assume from the opening line of this blog, this isn’t just about creating a neutral palette. The principle can be applied to almost any style or colour scheme.

If the pieces within your home share a similar visual rhythm and language, even the most layered spaces can still feel calm and cohesive.

For number five, consistency. We often see certain areas of a home forgotten about, particularly home offices, boot rooms and WCs, for example. Perhaps because there’s no obvious design direction these rooms should take. But really, that’s part of their beauty. There are no rules saying every room needs to look the same, and there’s absolutely no reason why you can’t introduce personality, colour and individual flair throughout your home. In fact, we’d encourage it.

Having said that, freedom should always be paired with consideration. For us, consistency comes down to ensuring that the architectural elements within a room feel cohesive. Your walls, skirting, cornicing and ceilings should feel as though they belong together, creating a considered backdrop for everything else that sits within the space. A home can have plenty of personality without feeling disconnected.

And finally, but definitely not least, adding something unexpected. As much as we can preach about consistency, layering, continuity and creating a cohesive home, sometimes the rules are there to be broken.

Without sounding too contradictory, we like interiors to strike the perfect balance between nourishing and stimulating. You want to feel relaxed and completely at home in your surroundings, of course, but is there anything more exciting than a little quirk or unexpected moment?

Whether it’s an incredible piece of artwork, an unusual antique, a quirky fabric, a collection of ceramics or a unique architectural detail, these are often the things that stop a home from feeling too predictable.

They’re the details that make you look twice. And ultimately, they're the things that make a home feel like yours.
